Grain Fumigation Tablets
| Once the grain to be stored is inside the silo, fumigate it with phosphine tablets under a number of trade names (PHOSTOXIN, GASTION, DETIA, QUICKPHOS or CELPHOS tablets) to destroy any insects remaining from the field. To eliminate the insects the number of tablets should be the same regardless whether the silo is full, half-full or less than half-full. Always put the tablets on the surface of the grain. The tablets should be wrapped in paper or maize husks. The tablets are toxic. Avoid touching them. |

|
The number of tablets to be used for one fumigation depends on the volume capacity of the metal silo and not on the amount of grain in the silo. |
|
Never put the tablets amidst the grain while filling the silo. |

Additional Information and Documents
| Phosphine: Fumigation Management November 1998 Author: Regional POSTCOSECHA Program Fumigants are insecticides in the form of gas. They kill adult insects that live on the outside of most grains and do away with the eggs, larvae and pupae that generally make their home inside the grain. Fumigants must be used only in receptacles that do not allow the gas to escape. Remember that it is toxic and can kill humans as well as domestic animals in the same way as it does insects. Nonetheless, phosphines are the least harmful fumigant. | |
