In Cuba 10'610 silos have been produced until 2009 with a total storage capacity of 5'856 tons. Approximately 4'600 tons of grain have been saved in 8 years. Still the percentage is very small considered that only 8'000 producers of 450'000 in the whole country have a silo and that the silos are used for various products.
Cuba still imports a large but decreasing quantity of grain from abroad. However, the decreasing imports cannot be related to the number of silos for three reasons:

  1. The number of silos is still very small and they are used for various products.
  2. The quantity of imported grain is still very large.
  3. The national harvest in this period has been affected by severe drought alternating with excessive rainfall, incidents with much more impact than the number of silos disposable.

The table beneath shows the savings from 2001 to 2008 taking the prices for imported grain in June 2008 from the Cuban import company ALIMPORT and assuming that half of the saved grain was maize and half beans. The savings from this period are seven times the amount invested in the POSTCOSECHA program.

POSTCOSECHA Dominican Republic

Organization Helvetas República Dominicana / Consorcio Postcosecha
Region Priority: border provinces (especially San Juan and Elías Piña)
Duration 1999-2007

Between 1999 and 2007 a total of over 6'000 metal silos have been produced and transferred to rural families. More than 150 tinsmiths were trained in the manufacturing of metal silos and 500 farmers selected to promote the silo. 30'000 farmers were trained in using the POSTCOSECHA technology to handle the harvested grain.

Results: a larger quantity of seeds for sowing available; more grain for human consumption and animal feeding; possibility to store the grain and take advantage of higher market prices; job creation and improvement of economic situation and living standard of farmers.
